The Bear Universe Spock

Since I'm still waiting for pictures from Vacationing Spock's last stop (and hoping he's in the mail to his next stop) I thought I would fill your lust for Spock with a cute, little Medicom Bearbricks Spock from their recent release.

I love Medicom Kubricks, but this is my first from their Bearbricks line. Oh I have been tempted in the past, Dark Knight set and the cool Star Wars bears I'm looking at you, but it took Spock to bring the goodness of Bearbricks to the Eclectorama Casa. Bearbricks do share some similar features to their cousins the Kubricks. Like articulation, leg and arm pieces.

This is an officially licensed piece as well. The funny thing is they included Spock's ears in the deco on the head, cause you can't have a Bearbricks without the Mickey Mouse type ears and you can't have Spock without the pointy ones.

This was released in the last quarter of 2009 and can be found pretty cheap on eBay, the only other thing it comes with is a card that has the title of the latest Star Trek movie on it. I think its pretty cool and will make a nice addition to the Spocklection.

As little bear Spock would say, "Wive wong and pwosper."

Rise of the Silver Surfer!

In honor of the upcoming Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer movie. I'm going to post a few Silver Surfer goodies! It goes without saying that if Batman is my favorite DC Comics character, then Silver Surfer is my top, if not favorite, Marvel character (I mean everyone loves Spider-man, that's a given).

I have been waiting for the Silver Surfer to make a screen appearance since I first saw Terminator 2, I knew right then that the technology existed to bring my favorite Marvel to life. I will admit that I wanted him to star in his own movie, but he did start out in the pages of Fantastic Four so it's only fitting.

Well since I haven't been able to locate any "new" Silver Surfer merch in my neck of the woods, and the budget is tighter, I thought I would feature some old classics. to start things off is a Kubricks Silver Surfer form the Japanese company Medicom. If you remember I have had Kubricks on the blog before, so it should be no surprise that this guy would be making an appearance sooner or later. Maybe it is a surprise, because I haven't really spoken about the Surfer of the Skies before this post. Anyway in true Kubricks form, Silver Surfer here has been shrunk and "cutiefied" along with his trusty board. Kubricks are known mainly as being a "Blind Assortment" toy. This means that in a series of say Marvel characters, you might know who is in the series, but until you open the box, you do not know who you are getting. This can also be called trading figures, the theory being that if you get two Silver Surfers you can trade one off for another character. Kind of makes it fun in my opinion.

One thing that I like about this figure is the foot peg on the board, it really makes "flying" him around the studio easier, keeps him from falling off. Come on I know all three of my readers at one point or the other has pretended his Batman could swing in from the tops of buildings, Aquaman is out swimming a school of barracuda, or even his Marvel Legends are waging battles all over the place. No? Oh well I guess I'm the only one that plays with his toys.

It's Astroboy!

Some more Kubricks goodness on Tuesday! I picked this Kubricks up from one of the most awesome, back alley, toy shops in Hong Kong! I was finishing up my shopping in this little (and by little I mean about the length and width of a full size pickup truck) shop when I spotted this Kubricks by the cashier.

I topped off my purchases with Astroboy here, and made my way to the second most awesome, back alley, toy shop in Hong Kong, which was right across the alley.

For those of you who are going "who's Astroboy?", he was a Manga character created by Tezuka Osamu in the 50's that later became a television show in the 60's. Considered by many to be the birth of Anime (Japanese Animation). Japan knows him by his name Mighty Atom, but either way it's a fun little comic / cartoon. I would recommend checking out the reprinted stuff from Dark Horse or maybe tracking down some of his cartoons.

Medicom Kubricks

Seems like I have a nice little Batman groove going, So why not continue with a little Batman? This is none other than the 89' Batman in the fun little Kubricks style. Kubricks is a toy line from Japan, from a company called Medicom. I have to say they make some of the coolest stuff. I hope to feature some more Medicom wares in the future. These toys are under 3 inches in height and all share some basic features, such as the same shaped head, basic body, arms, and legs. I guess these would be close to Lego mini figs, a little bigger, and I like to think these were the inspiration for Minimates from Art Asylum. I do have a few examples of Kubricks with sculpted heads and not the standard cylinder, these are mainly animal type characters, the ones I have include Bruce Lee. I'm guessing that they needed to have a better likeness of Mr. Lee than the cylinder could reflect, though Art Asylum did a pretty good job with their version.

Medicom has run the gamut with these guys. They cover popular Japanese properties like Astro Boy, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shin Getter, and even a set from the cult classic Battle Royal. They didn't stop there though, they started hitting the American licenses as well, Edward Scissor Hands, Planet of the Apes, Back to the Future, Star Wars, and of course Batman just to name a few.

So far as I can tell they have covered Batman with assortments from the following eras of the Dark Knight; Batman the 1989 Movie with some Batman Returns thrown in, Batman The Animated Series (including a couple Batman Beyond characters), The comic book style Batman, and finally the more recent Batman Begins Movie. I'm still working on getting most of these, but to date this 89' Batman is my favorite of the Batman Kubricks.
