The Phantom

I think I mentioned shooting some more pics of the Phantom last week. Well, better late than never. I can't say enough about this toy, it's a great representation of the character done in that classic Mego style by Cast-A-Way Toys. So lets check out the pics...

Soft Roto Head like back in the day

Unlike Megos from earlier days, the Phantom sports hands that are more flexible, almost like Kung Fu Grip, with trigger fingers extended, and the Phantom's rings on both hands. Amazing that they captured the ring's detail as well.

Belt buckle detail, my only gripe (which is very slight) is that the silver paint rubs off some. Not a deal killer in the least though. And hey, stripy britches!

Nice sculpt and feel on the Pistols. Detail of the hand and the "Business" Ring.

The belt and holsters are a softer, more flexible plastic so the holsters can close, Really a nice fit all the way.

The Ghost Who Walks!

I'm digging this figure so much I'm thinking about trying my hand at some customs using parts from the Cast-A-Way Toys site. I'm thinking first the Flash, maybe a cool Captain America, and a friend suggested Mandrake the Magian and Flash Gordon!

And the Winner Is!

This morning, with all the pomp and circumstance that could be had here at Eclectorama, we held our drawing for the Dr. McCoy House Call Contest. Grabbing a rather Un-Star Trek like Stormtrooper Helmet from the archive shelves, we placed all the entries in the "Hat" and with the help of my lovely assistant, we drew a name.

First, I want to thank everyone that entered, all the first time visitors, new readers and the new friends at the Mego Museum for coming by to enter. I hope everyone continues to come back for more toy goodness and hopefully we can do more of these contests. Also I want to recognize all the great "Dammit Jim" phrases in the comments, I really enjoyed them all, there were some gems in there I tell ya!

That's my hairy hand, not my assistant's, holding up the winner's name.

So with out further ado the winner is, drum roll please... Shawn Robare! Shawn I don't know if you have any Megos in your collection, but I do know you now have a Dr. McCoy coming your way! Shawn had also signed up to host Spock on his Spockcation earlier this year, so Shawn Dr. McCoy is getting put in the mail as we speak, I expect to see some team photos when Spock comes your way.

Thanks again everyone for entering, I think with the success of this contest I will most definitely be having more in the future! I hope everyone had a good time, well I know one of our staff members didn't, but I hope you did...

Sorry Gertie the contest was open to non Eclectorama employees only, I know you wanted a new chew toy, but this isn't for you, I'll pick you one up from the store.

Dr. McCoy house call contest!

As a kid I did not fully appreciate Dr. McCoy, funny how when you get older these characters are more of a necessity to the mythos than when you where small. This year's Star Trek Movie also helped his cause, as Karl Urban hands down delivered one of the best performances of that movie. McCoy ended up being my favorite character in the movie. So to celebrate this new found love for the good doctor I thought I would have a little contest.

Dr. Mego included a Dr. McCoy in a package that I received from him in preparations for Spockcation, I contacted him and he said it was a gift since I was "sacrificing a toy for the cause" which I thought was really generous. Then I thought how can I use this McCoy. I would be lying if I didn't first think he would make some great parts for a custom Trek figure, but I came to the quick realization that out of all the customs I have tried, a whopping three in about ten years, exactly zero were finished. So a giveaway seemed to be the best solution.

So here's the deal, since I have one to give away, every one that wants to be entered in the drawing give me your best "Dammit Jim! I'm a doctor, not a ______ !" in the comments section of this post, lets keep it at one per person.

Deadline (He's dead Jim!, sorry couldn't resist) for entries will be Midnight Central Time, Sunday, July 12, 2009. Then all entries will be placed in a hat and a winner will be drawn. The winner will be announced sometime Monday, July 13, 2009, and Dr. McCoy will be sent to your home to make a house call. I think a good way to get some EMCE toys out there, so Good luck!

Mego Museum Cards!

You know what they say, simple things...

Here's the random cards I received for posting Lulu and the Phantom on Squirrel Duty in the backyard! How cool this swag has a little bit of everything, my very first Star Trek cards, a Peter Parker, Planet of the Apes and a set title card! Sweet. I can't wait till I start getting extras and can post some contests or start trading.

IKEA means three things!

1) I'm going to spend some money.

2) I'm going to be building something called a flippyfluegen or something like that.

3) I'm going to Toy Joy!

And that's what this post is all about, number three! Yea for Toy Joy! I have had to say it before, but I'll re state my case. I loves me some Toy Joy. Toy Joy is the most awesome toy shop in Texas, the United States, make that the world, maybe even the galaxy!

Now this trip to Austin was by complete surprise. I had actually planned on making the trip in Sunday, when I would have been better prepared with my camera and a plan. This trip was sprung on me early Friday on a nice drive to San Marcus, a town between Eclectorama Land and Austin. it sort of went like this...

Wife: "you know we are about half way to Austin, we should just go ahead to IKEA and save gas"

Me: "I guess, though we are not really half way, maybe a third, and I don't have my camera, and... okay, let's do it"

Wife: "Great, wake me when we get there, I'm taking a nap."

So we hit IKEA, shop, shop, shop. Okay, pick up heavy stuff from self serve area, and we are out the door... Wow under two hours! It's a record! Toy Joy has been doing some expanding since I was last there, and there was all sorts of crazy goodness in the store that fine Friday afternoon. So much good stuff that I was like a kid in a candy store, I couldn't remember all the stuff when it came time to pick out a couple things to purchase. It wasn't till I had left that I remembered the other stuff, so bear with me real quick as I make a list for next time.

1) Awesome 12" vinyl Godizilla by back door.
2) Ultraman Halloween Mask in Kaiju section
3) Two headed Monster baby
4) Rubber monkey finger puppet assortment
5) Squirrel underpants
6) Windup Shinny Futurama Bender

There that should do it.

So what did I see and get this time? Well, I did shoot a few pics with my mobile phone, and I picked up a couple things, not really that special, but some stuff I wanted to get. Lets see...

A small part of the outside of the building, that robot's knobs say Toy Joy... hee hee

Sweet! Some vintage goodness represented by EMCE's Trek merchandise!

Part of the windup robot section, this will remind me that I need to add a couple of those robots to my list.

First up of my toy score, Bobble Head Spock. I haven't found one of these yet, I know Toys R Us are supposed to have them, but Toy Joy DOES have them!

Total impulse buy, I didn't realize these were blind box, I thought I was getting the U.S.S. Excelsior, the NCC one at that! The silver bag is chocolate, I passed this time on the chocolate.

Back of the box, some cool stuff to be had.

A close up of the ship I did get, the U.S.S. Grissom, NCC-638.

Another shot of the U.S.S. Grissom.

I saw this at checkout, so I guess it's another impulse buy, but I knew my son would love to have it!

That's it for this trip, but I'm hoping we make another trip soon. What's that? What did we pick up from IKEA? That's a surprise for another post.
